She's just what the doctor ordered

TAKING on the role of Dr Who's new companion Clara took a lot more out of Jenna-Louise Coleman than she expected.

Coleman says the physical exertion of filming the new season of the TV series, returning to ABC1 on March 31, meant she'd never slept better.

"You're always running - either away from something or towards something," she says.

As Coleman was 18 when the revamped version of the Time Lord's adventures began, initially with Christopher Eccleston, she regrets it was never a part of her childhood.

Now she's an avid fan and loves the role of Clara, who she says holds her own with the Doctor, played once more by Matt Smith.

"She doesn't really wear her heart on her sleeve, and I think she has quite a lot of secrets," Coleman says of Clara.

Taking on the job of the Doctor's new companion, with the legacy of Amy and Rory (Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill) still fresh would be intimidating for any actor.

And Coleman says it took a lot of discussion before she agreed to sign on.

"I thought through everything a lot and then Steven (Moffat, lead writer and executive producer) described what the story was and from then I totally jumped in with two feet first," she says.

While Coleman can't say too much about what's in store for Clara and the Doctor, she says the first show of the season features a new baddie who she thinks will provide kids with some brand new hide-behind-the-sofa moments.

"It's a villain with style, who is kind of terrifying to me," she says.

Filming the new series happened at breakneck speed, but Coleman says there's no doubt you have a great job "when I'm walking on a cloud or when I'm on a motorbike with Dr Who and I'm jetting around London past the Houses of Parliament".

There is a Clara doll in the works but Coleman hasn't seen it, though she says her housemates will probably enjoy having one around.

"I couldn't have it in my bedroom, could I?" she asks, laughing.

"Maybe downstairs somewhere, but it'll be great to keep for my grandchildren."

Dr Who, ABC1, Sunday, 7.30pm
