RUSSELL Crowe looks set to reprise his role as tour guide to the stars, with reports he will help welcome US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres when she makes her first official public appearance in Australia this weekend.

The Oscar winner, who captained Oprah Winfrey during her  made-for-TV regatta on Sydney Harbour in 2010, is rumoured to be in discussions with The Ellen Show's producers who arrived earlier this week to finalise plans for the TV star's postponed working holiday.

DeGeneres and her Aussie wife Portia are expected to fly out of Los Angeles tomorrow, bound for Sydney and opening leg of their first trip Down Under together, delayed last week after the TV favourite was bed-ridden with a bout of the flu.

Crowe is expected to play a leading role one of Sydney events planned for this weekend, the details of which will remain top secret until tweeted by the star (@TheEllenShow) on her arrival.

A spokesman for Crowe said the actor was unavailable to comment on any proposed plans.

Tour sponsor Swisse did not respond to calls for comment on whether its A-list ambassador Nicole Kidman, who helped announce the tour on The Ellen Show in January, would be involved.

The mad scramble to rework DeGeneres's itinerary has seen a number of plans to interact with local fans and tourism operators on a more intimate scale scrapped, with producers focusing their attention on activities which will give the Emmy-winner the best chance to meet the most people at once.

Not missing his chance to press the flesh with the famous tourist, NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell is understood to be at the top of the VIP guest list and keen to welcome the star couple to the state.

A spokesman for Mr O'Farrell said while plans were still to be confirmed, "we would obviously welcome any opportunity to meet Ellen, Portia and her team. Who wouldn't?''

Meanwhile, Ellen's roving reporter Jeannie Klisiewicz is already hard at work filming stories out-and-about in Sydney and Melbourne, where she surprised shoppers at Myer with a cheeky take on a window display, featuring the show's buff new underwear model and Purple Heart recipient Mike.
