THE Voice has posted another monster ratings figure and The Block Sky High got off to a strong start last night.

Seven’s new drama A Place to Call Home dropped slightly as it gets set to face House Husbands next week.

The Voice averaged a super 1.925 million viewers nationally last night to easily capture the number one crown.

Nine’s talent show hasn’t hit the heights of last year when it averaged upwards of 2.7 million for some of the audition and battle round episodes.

The Voice has made up for that with consistency. It is hitting upwards of 1.9 million viewers every episode.

The launch episode of The Block Sky High averaged 1.312 million viewers.

Nine’s renovation show performed strongest in Melbourne (465,000) where this year’s series is set.

The Block Sky High’s big test comes on Tuesday when Seven rolls out rival House Rules.

“This is a very good solid launch,” media analyst Steve Allen says. “Tightening The Block up with none of the usual eliminations won’t give House Rules much wiggle room.”

Rival Sunday Night was no slouch. Seven’s current affairs show averaged a very healthy 1.238 million viewers against The Block.

A Place to Call Home averaged 1.18 million viewers last night – a strong result but a long way off the 1.768 million that tuned into the premiere episode a fortnight ago.

Last week, A Place to Call Home averaged 1.305 million viewers nationally.

Seven’s period drama faces a fresh test next Sunday when it goes head-to-head with House Husbands.

Nine is switching its family drama, with Gary Sweet and Gyton Grantley, from Mondays to Sundays.

Nine’s 60 Minutes: Flight 447, which investigated the crash of an Air France plane in 2007, averaged 1.312 million viewers last night.

CHANNEL 7 has set up a TV home renovations ratings war by announcing that House Rules will begin next Tuesday, on May 14 at 7.30pm.

House Rules, hosted by Johanna Griggs, will continue on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The three-nights-a-week move pits House Rules directly up against Nine’s renovation reality series The Block Sky High.

The first episode of House Rules has the added pressure of also going up against ratings blockbuster The Voice.

The Block Sky High will screen from 7pm on May 14 with The Voice screening from 8pm.

Wednesday and Thursday episodes of House Rules will also clash with The Block Sky High which will screen from 7pm to 8pm both nights.

House Rules features six state-based teams renovating each other’s houses. The Block Sky High features five state-based teams renovating a six-storey Melbourne hotel.

House Rules' six teams are Michelle and Steve (NSW), Nick and Chris (Vic), Amy and Sean (Qld), Carly and Leighton (SA), Jemma and Ben (WA), and Jane and Plinio (Tas).

Seven has promised that an entire home will be renovated and revealed each week.

TV war fires up with Block premiere

CHANNEL 9 has fired the first salvo in the TV home renovation war by announcing that The Block Sky High will premiere next Sunday at 6.30pm.

Seven looks set to announce the on-air date for rival House Rules, from the makers of My Kitchen Rules, in the next 24 hours.

There is every chance the two shows will go head-to-head across coming weeks.

There can only be one ratings winner.

The big twist on The Block is that the five state-based teams are renovating six floors of a former hotel in bayside South Melbourne.

"When it comes to The Block one thing is for sure - we love surprises," host Scott Cam says.

"So when we stumbled across this old hotel we realised we could set a challenge for our new contestants like no other."

Block contestants have 10 weeks to demolish and renovate more than 80 rooms and transform each floor of the hotel into 220-metre luxury apartments complete with three bedrooms and five bathrooms, with open plan kitchen, living and dining, plus an enclosed terrace.

The couples will also build a huge roof terrace with 360-degree views of Melbourne.

"I honestly don’t know how they’ll do it,” Cam says. "It’s just massive. Six stories of solid concrete construction and they will have to pull the whole thing apart and start again."

The twist with House Rules is that its six couples will swap keys to each other’s homes. Every home will be renovated in a week.

The Block teams are Queensland’s Mark and Katrina Johnson, Western Australia’s Matt Di Costa and Kimberley Owen, New South Wales’ Jarrod and Madison Coppock, Victoria’s George and Rebecca Douros, and South Australian identical twins Alisa and Lysandra Fraser.

Each couple receives a base budget of $80,000. Neale Whitaker, Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer judge the weekly room reveals.

Teams keep their auction profits and the couple whose property makes the most over reserve wins an additional $100,000.

THE Channel 9 renovation show finale nailed a massive 2.119 million viewers nationally as winners Phil and Amity Rankine pocketed $295,000 profit and $100,000 prize money.

Last night's episode was so strong that it beat 2013 ratings monster My Kitchen Rules (which averaged just 1.563 million – one of its poorest results this season).

For The Block victor Amity Rankine, while nothing compares to the birth of a child, the dizzying moment when her Bondi heritage semi emerged the winner of the series' climactic auction reminded her of the blur of emotion and confusion which followed the delivery of her daughter, Poppy.

Like that life-changing moment when she had to ask husband Phil to "double-check" the couple had in fact welcomed a baby girl, Rankine says she was not sure, amid the cries and jubilation, the pair had pulled ahead in the bidding to clinch the first All-Stars series of the Channel 9 ratings hit.

In the dramatic finale, the blue house favourites pocketed $295,000 profit and $100,000 prize money after their renovated Federation cottage sold for $1.67 million under the hammer, beating out rivals Josh and Jenna Densten by just a $20,000 margin.

The action-packed auctions took contestants and viewers alike on a roller-coaster with the Denstens first to market and scoring a massive profit of $275,000 on their property which sold for $1.375m.

But celebrations were soured when the hard luck pairing of Mark Bowyer and Duncan Miller took a hit on their terrace, selling for just $25,000 above their $1.345m reserve.

It was a bitter blow for the tradie mates who endured a torrid time on the series, with Bowyer's wife diagnosed with skin cancer and then rushed to hospital himself after suffering a suspected heart attack.

Spirits were lifted in the third auction when Melbourne couple Dani Wales and Dan Reilly banked a tidy $220,000 profit for their terrace (selling for $1.575m), but it came down to the last bid on the last auction to seal it for the Adelaide couple, who juggled the supervision of their two children during the renovation.

Professional singer, Amity, who will leverage her TV fame with an east coast tour of her stage show starting in May, said the heady auction experience made for a better time than when the couple finished last during their first appearance on The Block in 2003.

"I could have thrown up or passed out...I've never been so nervous about anything in my whole life. The pressure of everyone saying we were going to win felt like we were jinxed."

But after host Scott Cam confirmed the result, she said: "literally all the cliches in the book, my head was spinning, I couldn't hear anything, I was crying, it was just amazing."

Phil Rankine, who earned fan favouritism for his love of coffee martinis, revealed they toasted their victory with more of the cocktails and champagne and a party that ended in the wee hours yesterday.

Their win was vindication after the final weeks of competition became a tense affair after Dan and Dani conspired with Josh and Jenna to rob the Rankines of a room victory.

But Amity said last night: "everyone congratulated everybody. Aside from Mark and Duncan, which was really upsetting, everybody did so well how could you not be happy walking away with between $200,000 and $275,000. That certainly cooled any tensions because everyone got a reward for their efforts."

The show's producers were also popping the cork on another successful spin-off, with the All-Star season earning its contenders a total of $815,000 in profits.

But local property experts warned while the auction results were "strong" for the Bondi area, there was no "real world" profit in the outcome.

Bondi real estate expert Ric Serrao, principal at Raine & Horne Double Bay, said the results achieved at The Block auction were strong for the current Bondi market. But when taking into consideration what had been spent on the homes, there is not that much profit left over.

"If you're looking to flick a Bondi house like that then you'd need to spend somewhere in the area of $250,000 to $300,000 to renovate, then consider stamp duty and holding costs," Mr Serrao said.

"I think The Block is a great show, I think it's fun. But if people really think they can do the same thing themselves, and they're not professionals, then they're getting the wrong message," he said.

Last night’s ratings result is a massive boost for Nine which has a new series of The Block starting later in the year.

Block stand-in no stranger to drama

Suspected heart attack puts a halt on hard work during Channel Nine's The Block. Nine Network

DALE Vine knows all about being rushed to hospital with a medical emergency during filming of The Block, which made him the perfect choice to play "white knight" after one half of The Two Fat Tradies team was forced out of the series with a heart scare.

While Mark Bowyer has rushed to reassure fans he has made a full recovery since collapsing from a "mild'' heart attack, his replacement has revealed the physical strain he endured during his 2012 stint on The Block All Stars also saw him hospitalised for a blood infection.

Network Ten makes up for lost ratings in catch-up reviewing

In the latest medical emergency to shock The Blockfans, Vine told News Limited he was given 24 hours notice to leave behind his Melbourne landscaping business and wife Sophie to help Bowyer's DIY buddy Duncan Miller keep their Bondi renovation for Channel 9's series on track.

But the chance to help out a mate and return to the Logie-winning reality show was a no-brainer for Vine, who will make his arrival at the Tasman Street cottages on air tonight.

"Once I got there, Duncan wasn't in the best form ... he'd lost his mate and come off a huge week with three rooms to reveal. I'd had some health dramas myself last year and could really sympathise with him. It was all the motivation I needed to just roll up my sleeves and get stuck in,'' he said.

Despite Bowyer getting the all-clear from doctors before the end of the TV build, producers ruled out his return to the competition, with Vine to see out the series as Miller's sidekick.

His debut, however, was not without incident, with the newbie pairing put under pressure during the next challenge: to style the interior of a new luxury apartment.

Racing against the clock, the all-male team strike trouble when their shopping choices are delivered to the wrong address and then their car keys are lost on the work site.

"It was a real baptism of fire,'' Vine said, "but that's what the pressure of The Block does.''

The health dramas have come as a heart-started for the show's ratings, pushing it to state wins against Channel 7 rival, My Kitchen Rules on Monday night.

While MKR kept its national lead (1.791m viewers) over The Block (1.531m), the renovating All Stars out-scored the amateur cooks in Melbourne (537,000 to 519,000) and Brisbane (345,000 to 336,000).

MKR triumphed in Sydney hitting 491,000 viewers to The Block's 417,000.

All-star showdown between block rivals

IT was a no-holds-barred episode of The Block: All Stars last night as plans were hatched, allegiances were formed and victory was snatched away.

After winning the fourth room reveal last Sunday night with their "secret weapon", Amity and Phil's celebration proved short-lived, with victory being whisked away quicker than they could say "duped".

Viewers were shocked to realise that Dan and Dani had colluded with Josh and Jenna in the Eco-Power Challenge to take the power away from Phil and Amity.

With the teams being set the challenge of using the least amount of power possible, Dan and Dani decided to use zero power, doing everything by candlelight and the pairs agreed to split the money. This meant Josh and Jenna won the $10,000.

"We had absolutely no idea [that the teams had struck up a deal]", Amity tells news.com.au.

"It wasn't until afterwards that we realised... we were so focused and exhausted, we almost laughed", she admits, adding that it was a huge surprise.

"As soon as they drew [on the scoreboard] we knew they would take the point off us and give it to their friends".

Amity adds that Jenna did come clean about conspiring with Dan and Dani after the challenge, telling her rival that the teams "decided they had to stop [Amity and Phil] at all costs."

"It was a backhanded compliment, but it's not something we would have done, it's not in the spirit of things", the mother-of-two says.

Amity and Phil, dubbed the "chumps" in previous weeks for scoring the lowest, were on a high after their massive win, and said they were both "so dejected" by the shock loss.

After last night's big reveal, the question on everyone's mind is: Will Amity and Phil attempt some sort of payback?

Amity reassures us that "it's not really their style" but hints that Phil does set up some light "mock revenge" to get back at the other teams.

THE Block All Stars contestant Mark Bowyer wants to put his fans' minds at rest.

The lovable tradie says he is “feeling fitter than ever” despite a serious health scare which saw him have to leave renovation show. 

“I dodged a bullet,” says the 55-year-old carpenter. “It was a wake up call for me. I had become run down on the show, but once I got to hospital and they ran some tests they actually discovered a previously undiagnosed condition which meant that I not only couldn’t return to complete The Block, I also had to change a lot of other things in my life.”

Mark has since changed his diet and started a daily exercise regime “I get up every morning and walk 6 kilometres and so far I have lost eight kilos. If I keep going at this pace I’m going to catch Duncan (who has lost 35 kilos since his first appearance on The Block in 2010). 

The Two Fat Tradies as they were affectionately known are now rapidly becoming The Two Flat Tradies. “As scared as I was at the time – and disappointed to leave the show when I did, I now think The Block may have saved my life and with the support of my girls and wife Jan and the huge response I have had from the fans of the show I am feeling better than ever and glad to say I’m going to be around for a very long time to come.”

The news will come as a welcome relief to fans of the show that have come to love the down-to-earth lads who are known for the quick wit and quirky sense of style.

Bowyer had a particularly tough time on the show struggling with being away from his family and wife Jan who was battling melanoma. The tradies have won one room so far scoring the most points for the kids’ bedroom.

Nine’s renovation show averaged 1.531 million viewers – a season high – and outpointed MKR in Melbourne and Brisbane.

My Kitchen Rules averaged 1.791 million viewers nationally in an episode that saw teams competing in an herbs and spices challenge.

On last night’s edition of The Block All Stars, Bowyer, one half of the Two Fat Tradies team, was struck down with a suspected heart attack.

The 55-year-old carpenter was forced to leave the show after the health scare.

Bowyer’s replacement, reportedly former contestant Dale Vine, will be announced on tomorrow night’s show.

In Melbourne, The Block All Stars averaged 537,000 viewers. My Kitchen Rules averaged 519,000.

In Brisbane, The Block All Stars averaged 345,000 and My Kitchen Rules averaged 336,000.

My Kitchen Rules triumphed in Sydney hitting 491,000 viewers to The Block’s 417,000.

The two shows went head-to-head between 7.30pm and 8pm.

The Block All Stars has been building in the ratings ever since it premiered on February 4.

Early episodes hovered around 900,000 viewers nationally but that figure has grown to more than a million over the past week.

Sunday’s show hit 1.44 million viewers and that was trumped by last night’s record ratings.

THEY'VE done their blocks - now it's time for the public to decide whether they like what they see.

The four teams competing in Channel 9's The Block All Stars will today open their newly renovated homes for public inspection for the first time.

Thousands of people are expected to file through the four semi-detached homes on Tasman St, Bondi, which local real estate agents predict will each fetch between $1.2 million and $1.6 million.

Fans of the show, known for its tantrums-and-tool-belts style, have already seen three rooms on-air.

But today's event will be the first time the entire floor plan is on display, offering a sneak peek before the finale, to air later this month.

More than 5000 people queued to inspect the Vaucluse apartments renovated when The Block was last in Sydney three years ago.

A Nine spokeswoman said it was hard to say how many would turn out today.

Phil and Amity's house at No.12 is one of two with a third bedroom, an addition they hope will give them the winning edge.

"We didn't just want to make it pretty for the cameras, we wanted a practical home.

"That's why there are two bathrooms, three bedrooms and the backyard has grass," Amity said of the couple's return to the show a decade after their first appearance.

Phil and Amity win biggest Block week

PHIL and Amity's third bedroom "secret weapon" has won them the fourth room reveal of The Block: All Stars.

After coming back from being named "chumps" last week, scoring the lowest of all four teams, the pair said they were delighted to come off with a win.

"We're absolutely stoked to win our first room," Phil told news.com.au. "We took a very big gamble with that bedroom and it paid off."

The couple said they added as much as $100,000 to the value of their home by turning the formal lounge into a third bedroom.

Dubbed the "biggest week ever in the history of The Block," all four teams had to renovate not only the formal lounge room, but a hallway and a linen cupboard area.

"The formal lounge on it's own is bigger than either of the two front bedrooms, so just delivering that on its own would have been a challenge, but adding the hallway which goes on forever and a linen cupboard which you have to get right in there," Phil added.

"It was like three rooms in the one week which is absolutely horrific and saying that to actually win with that up against us makes it all the more better."

Viewers may have thought that Phil had an even tougher time nursing a hangover after overindulging at the Elton John concert - but he says all wasn't as it seemed.

"It looked on the show like I had a hangover. I had a few things to do after the show and missed out on some sleep but it wasn't as massive a night as it looked. I'm too old for that, it wasn't the case at all," he said.
