CHANNEL 9's answer to Downton Abbey - Parade's End - bombed in the ratings last night.

Parade's End, the acclaimed British period drama starring Australian beauty Adelaide Clemens and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch crashed with a dismal 453,000 viewers nationally for its debut episode.

The second hour of Parade's End dropped even further - to a disastrous 322,000 viewers nationally.

Parade's End was easily beaten by Seven’s Last Resort (771,000) as well as the ABC's QI (759,000) and The Agony of Life (688,000), and Ten's Mr & Mrs Murder (596,000).

"Here we have Nine’s first outright failure, and nearly all the critics got it wrong," media analyst Steve Allen says.

The BBC mini-series, based on the stories of Ford Maddox Ford and scripted by Tom Stoppard, has received rave reviews but was always a strange fit for Channel 9.

The success of Downton Abbey, which screens on Channel Seven in Australia, has spawned a rash of British historical dramas including the re-boot of Upstairs Downstairs and The Paradise.

None of them have matched Downton Abbey’s ratings.

Last night’s ratings were dominated by Seven's My Kitchen Rules which averaged a whopping 1.753 million viewers nationally.
